Tree species that thrive on the Lower North Shore.
Harbour breeze, sandstone soil, compact blocks — the Lower North Shore has a distinctive growing environment. Six species our arborists recommend for long-term success.

The Lower North Shore — Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Lane Cove, Northbridge, and around — has a distinctive growing environment: harbour breeze, sandstone-based soil, compact blocks, heritage streetscapes. The species that thrive here aren't necessarily the ones we'd plant in Wahroonga or Beecroft.
Here are six our arborists recommend when clients ask what to plant after a removal.
1. Sydney red gum (Angophora costata)
The signature species of the Lower North Shore sandstone outcrops. Native, drought-tolerant once established, stunning cinnamon bark. Grows to 15-25m over decades — needs a block with genuine breathing room. Not for compact courtyards.
2. Tuckeroo (Cupaniopsis anacardioides)
Under-appreciated and perfect for Mosman / Cremorne blocks. Grows to 8m, tolerates salt spray, roots behave around retaining walls, evergreen canopy year-round. Handles harbour breeze without leaf burn.
3. Crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)
For the compact courtyard that still wants a flowering tree. Grows to 5-8m, summer flowering in pink / purple / white, bark exfoliates in mottled tones year-round. Deciduous so winter light reaches the garden beneath.
4. Lilly pilly (Syzygium paniculatum)
For boundary screening without TPO complications. Hedged to 2-4m it's a dense evergreen screen; left to grow, reaches 8-10m as a specimen tree. Native, bird-attracting red fruit, salt-tolerant.
5. Sydney blue gum cultivar — small-form
The dwarf cultivars stay under 10m instead of the species standard 30m+. Heritage feel without the eventual canopy management burden. Best on blocks that want a gum tree but can't accommodate a full Eucalyptus saligna.
6. Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera)
The species you see on the older Mosman / Balmoral streets — tall, columnar, salt-tolerant, long-lived. Native to the Lower North Shore. Specimen tree for larger blocks only — plan for 20m at maturity.
What to avoid
- Japanese maples — beautiful but burn in harbour salt spray within two seasons.
- Most imported deciduous species — blocks on 500m² struggle to fit them at maturity.
- Fast-growing aggressive-rooting species (willows, poplars) — damage sandstone retaining walls within 10 years.
- Lemon-scented gum (Corymbia citriodora) — beautiful but drops heavy branches unpredictably.
Planting season
Autumn is the best time to plant on the Lower North Shore. Soil retains enough warmth for root establishment without the summer heat stress that kills more new trees than any disease. Aim for April through June.
Water deeply for the first two summers — twice a week, 30 litres per tree — then let the species' natural drought tolerance take over.
Heritage overlay
Before planting anything near a boundary, check the council TPO for protected-species rules and any heritage conservation area overlay. Mosman, Cremorne, and the Willoughby side of Castlecrag all carry overlays that affect what you can plant and how close to boundaries.
A 30-minute site consultation from an AQF-qualified arborist pays for itself on species selection alone.
Frequently asked
Quick answers about this topic.
What tree works in a 500m² Mosman backyard?
Crepe myrtle, tuckeroo, Sydney red gum, or a small-cultivar jacaranda all max out around 6-8m — proportional to the site without dominating it.
Can I plant near sandstone retaining walls?
Yes, but avoid aggressive-rooting species. Lilly pillies, tuckeroos, and ornamental pears are all wall-safe.
