Pruning decisions

Cut what is needed, keep what is sound.

Good pruning begins with the reason for the work. Clearance from a roof is different from removing deadwood, reducing end weight or improving a young tree’s structure.

The proposed cuts should suit the tree’s species, condition and age. If the tree is protected, confirm whether the planned work needs council approval before booking.

Tree Pruning — at a glance

Useful things to know about tree pruning.

Start with the aim
Clearance, deadwood, structure, size or storm-damaged branches
Avoid topping
Indiscriminate height cuts can create weak regrowth and decay
Council check
Significant pruning can require approval on protected trees
Branches targeted
Agree the clearance, deadwood or canopy outcome before work

    Inspect the tree

The team checks the tree, access and the branches relevant to the outcome.

  3. Step 03

    Confirm the pruning work

Protected trees

★★★★★

Third year in a row we've had them back for the jacarandas out the front. They know what they're doing, they turn up when they say they will, and the trees have never looked better. Can't ask for more than that.

Big job for us, had a few trees that needed sorting out and one that was half dead. John walked around the garden with me for a good half hour, explained what needed doing and what could wait. Didn't try to upsell. Crew were polite and knew what they were on about.

Had quotes from two other mobs who both wanted to take the old eucalyptus out. John reckoned a reduction would do it and he was right — looks heaps better and saved us a fortune. Honest bloke, will use again.

Useful answers

Tree pruning questions.

  • Pruning selects cuts for a defined purpose and retains suitable growth points. “Lopping” is often used broadly, but indiscriminate topping or cutting between suitable nodes can damage the tree and create weak regrowth.

  • Ownership, access and council rules all matter. Discuss the concern with the tree owner and confirm permission and any approval before work is arranged.

  • Possibly. Councils distinguish minor maintenance from more substantial work, and heritage or ecological controls may also apply. Check the current rule for the address and proposed cuts.

  • Send a full-tree photo, closer images of the affected branches, the area requiring clearance and access from the street or driveway.
